Throwing Gauges
Throw every mug to the same ounce.
Six square throwing gauges, 8 to 16 oz, with clay shrinkage already built into the models. Print them, drop one into your pot while it's on the wheel, and you'll know when the inside is big enough.
Approximate fired capacity for each gauge, assuming about 12% total shrinkage.
-
Step 1
Print at 100% scale
Load the STL into your slicer and print it as-is. Don't rescale it, or the shrinkage math stops working.
-
Step 2
Throw your form
Center, open and pull your walls the way you normally would.
-
Step 3
Check with the gauge
Lower the gauge into the vessel. If the interior has reached the gauge's dimensions, you've hit your target capacity.
Sized for the wet pot, not the finished one.
Clay shrinks as it dries and fires. Each model is enlarged to allow for about 12% total shrinkage, so a pot that matches the gauge on the wheel ends up close to the labeled capacity after the glaze firing.
Clay bodies vary. If yours shrinks a lot more or less than 12%, your final capacity will be a little different.
